Optimality of winner-take-all contests: the role of attitudes toward risk

چکیده
This paper studies the role of risk attitudes in determining optimality winner-take-all contests. We compare typical single-winner lottery contest with two alternatives, both spreading rewards to more players: through holding multiple prize-giving competitions or guaranteeing a bottom prize for losers. In first comparison, we find that multiple-competition is as effective when contestants are neutral, but former induces effort than latter averse and prudent. second always dominated by could have an advantage over prudent, it likely so become

متن کاملEntry into Winner-Take-All and Proportional-Prize Contests
This experiment compares the performance of two contest designs. In the winner-take-all tournament, the highest performing contestant wins a prize. In the proportional-payment design, that same prize is divided among the contestants according to their share of total achievement. We find that proportional prizes elicit higher entry rates and thus more total achievement than the winner-take-all t...
متن کاملWinner-Take-All Crowdsourcing Contests with Stochastic Production
We study winner-take-all contests for crowdsourcing procurement in a model of costly effort and stochastic production. The principal announces a prize value P , agents simultaneously select a level of costly effort to exert towards production, yielding stochastic quality results, and then the agent who produces the highest quality good is paid P by the principal. We derive conditions on the pro...
متن کاملOn the Evolution of Attitudes towards Risk in Winner-Take-All Games
A long-standing conjecture is that winner-take-all games such as patent races lead to the survival of risk-takers and the extinction of risk-averters. In many species a winner-take-all game determines the males' right to reproduce, and the same argument suggests that males will evolve to be risk-takers. Psychological and sociological evidence buttresses the argument that males are more risk-tak...
متن کاملWinner-Take-All Autoencoders
In this paper, we propose a winner-take-all method for learning hierarchical sparse representations in an unsupervised fashion. We first introduce fully-connected winner-take-all autoencoders which use mini-batch statistics to directly enforce a lifetime sparsity in the activations of the hidden units. We then propose the convolutional winner-take-all autoencoder which combines the benefits of ...
